From Wing Yip to Panda Fresh: Adaptation and Rebirth of Britain's Chinese Restaurant Industry

Professor Gordon Cheung of Durham University recently hosted a lecture at the University of Tübingen in Germany, exploring the development and adaptability of Britain's Chinese restaurant industry amid historical changes and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Historical Evolution of the Chinese Community and Restaurant Industry

According to the 2021 census, Britain has 502,216 people of Chinese ethnicity, representing 0.8 per cent of the total population. A YouGov survey the same year found that British people's favourite takeaway cuisine was Chinese food, ahead of Indian cuisine and fish and chips, demonstrating that British society maintains a close relationship with Chinese food culture.
