Services and durables drive consumption — but has the recovery arrived?

Hong Kong recorded strong first-quarter real economic growth, with even private consumption expenditure — long considered a weak spot — surging 5.0 per cent, double the rate seen in the second through fourth quarters of last year. Yet this sits uncomfortably with the widespread impression of empty shopfronts across the city. A closer look is warranted.
