Industrial revolutions brought major upheaval — yet growth and jobs followed familiar patterns

Discussions of AI's impact on the economy and employment tend to fall into two camps: one sees AI as positive for growth but negative for jobs, the other as positive for both. The data, however, suggest the real picture is not so neatly positive or negative, but rather more complicated than either view allows.
