Abe and Takaichi have been mythologised — but Japan's structural problems remain

Japan's elevated profile in recent years owes much, in this column's view, to the sharp rally in Japanese equities. Yet beyond the stock market, even the exchange rate has told a similarly unremarkable story: over the past two and a half years, the dollar-yen rate has moved largely without direction, oscillating between 140 and 160.
