Monetary policy faces no cyclical dilemma — supply problems need supply-side solutions

Recent commentary has focused on what is often described as a dilemma for the Federal Reserve: a weakening labour market alongside renewed inflation pressure, raising concerns about stagflation. When unemployment and inflation are both elevated — as in the 1970s, when each exceeded 4–5 per cent — such concerns are well founded. At present, however, neither indicator has reached that level, making comparisons premature.
